Do you know how to attract donors through sound financial decisions? Is your lack of a financial background hampering your career or hindering your organization?

You don’t need an MBA to read a financial statement, but making sound decisions based on the numbers is key to keeping our niche strong in this economy. As donors grow leery of unsound business practices and budgets shrink, you need to arm yourself with new skills and tools!

Join YNPN San Diego on May 21st to learn how to confidently steer your organization with financial decisions based on real financial data. Go for that managerial position with confidence because you are a savvy business person who can dominate a financial statement, balance sheet, or cash flow analysis.

Paul Redfern is a CPA who can teach you to make sound financial decisions and show you how to avoid common mistakes of nonprofit leaders.

Find Your Sweet Spot: Maximizing Profitability and Mission Impact (13 Jun 2012)

Nonprofit Sustainability: Making Strategic Decisions for Financial Viability by Jan Masaoka, Jeanne Bell, and Steve Zimmerman.

Nonprofit Sustainability is intended for nonprofit executives and board members and discusses the ways nonprofits can ensure sustainability through the current economic climate and well into the future by taking a more dynamic approach to the decision-making process. The book focuses on two key concepts:

Success cannot be driven - or measured - by long-term, detailed plans. Given the accelerating pace of change and developments in the nonprofit sector, it's not enough for an organization to create a strategic plan and revise it every 3-5 years. Nonprofits need to be more responsive to evolving trends in the field or changing needs in the community. As funding streams dry up and client populations change, it is impossible to arrive at a business model that is permanently sustainable. Instead, nonprofits must constantly monitor these developments and adapt programs and funding models as necessary. As the authors state, "Sustainability is an orientation, not a destination."

Nonprofit sustainability encompasses both financial sustainability and programmatic sustainability.
Without a plan for long-term financial stability, an organization cannot operate successful programs. On the other hand, a financially strong organization without high-impact programs fails to address its mission. Nonprofits need to examine and discuss program impact together with profitability and financial sustainability in order effectively assess the viability of current programs and the long-term direction of the organization.

To help organizations assess their existing business model, the book introduces the Matrix Map tool for visualizing impact. This tool can be used to determine the current sustainability of programs and finances and leads directly to strategic decision-making based on this assessment. To help readers better understand this model, the authors provide three case studies of fictional organizations. Purchase the book at a local Barnes and Noble or online at http://amzn.to/xSSdrQ.

Here is a FREE powerpoint presentation on the book: http://www.grassrootsfundraising.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/Nonprofit-Sustainability-Jan-Masaoka-shortened1.pdf

Let's get together for a thought-provoking conversation with other non-profit leaders from around San Diego. And don't forget about Bamboo Lounge's amazing happy hour specials ($3 drafts, $5 sangria, and BOGO sushi).
