Join YNPN San Diego and leaders from the San Diego nonprofit community in a unique dialogue on the importance of self care; breaking through any obstacles preventing you to creating a healthier and happier YOU; and small steps to take you in that direction while sharing resources and tips of successful self care practices.

Getting your foot in the door is only the first step to building the nonprofit career you desire. Learn the steps you’ll need to take to grow in your career, create the impact you seek, and get noticed by your next boss. Presenting and facilitating on the topic will be Laura Gassner Otting, President of Nonprofit Professionals Advisory Group, a nationally retained executive search firm specializing in mission-driven recruiting. About Laura: Laura
Gassner Otting founded the Nonprofit
Professionals
Advisory Group in 2002. Prior to forming the group, she served as
the senior vice president of ExecSearches.com, the web's leading site
for mid- to senior-level nonprofit job postings and search services.
Laura has served as vice president at Isaacson, Miller, one of the
largest search firms in New England, and one of the most highly
respected non-profit executive search firms in the country. Previously,
Laura served as a presidential appointee for the White House Office of
National Service, a program officer for the Corporation for National
Service and as a member of the Clinton/Gore Transition Team and 1992
Election Team.
She holds a Master of Arts in Political Management from the George Washington University and a Bachelor of Arts in Government from the University of Texas at Austin. Laura sits on the board of College Bound Dorchester and is the Clerk and Governance Chair of the board of Newton Montessori School. She has served as a member of the board of Camp Starfish and the Alumni Board of the Graduate School of Political Management at the George Washington University and as the founding board chair of both Strong Women, Strong Girls and the Boston Choral Ensemble. Laura is the author of Change Your Career: Transitioning to the Nonprofit Sector.

YNPN San Diego is celebrating the many recent graduates in San Diego at our next Sector Social! On June 17th we are encouraging all our attendees to “Invite a Grad” to this unique Sector Social. This is an opportunity to provide to recent graduates a network of nonprofit professionals. Graduates can be undergrad to PhD level -- all are welcome! Bring a recent or soon-to-be graduate and do-si-do your way to All American Grill and let them loose. Professionals like yourself will be there as the wells of information and pillars of inspiration to lend an ear to our emerging leaders. Stepping Into the Spotlight: Next Gen
Executive Director Panel
Are you interested in becoming an Executive Director some day or learning more about the perspectives of next gen leaders in the San Diego nonprofit community? Do you want to learn what challenges executive directors face and how they can be overcome? If so, then come attend this unique event and learn all about what it means and takes to be a "Next Gen ED" in the San Diego nonprofit community.
This is great chance to hear first-hand what it takes to be work your way into this leadership role, how to lead an organization, manage a work/life balance and much more. Following the panel, we will open the space with facilitated small group conversations for attendees to share their own leadership experiences and lessons learned while providing an opportunity to ask questions, get feedback, and share their own input on next gen leadership.
As a nonprofit leader (or an aspiring leader) YNPN San Diego wants to support your growth and knowledge on leadership. Ryan Feinstein is the Co-Founder of the “Next-Gen Collaborative” – a strategic consulting and leadership development organization that offers collaborative tools and practices for next-gen leaders to be successful professionally and fulfilled personally for making a contribution in their lives, communities, and organizations. He is also the founder of the Global Youth in Action Programs and Program Development Director for the Bali Institute for Global Renewal, a non-profit that offers programs on leadership and indigenous wisdom. Working with the World Café Community Foundation, Ryan is currently helping to develop new ways for conversational leadership to be brought into communities and organizations as a basis for social innovation and transformation.
Emily Davis - Panelist
President, EDA Consulting & Co-Founder/Chair YNPN San Diego
Emily began her career working in the field of ending violence against women more than 10 years ago as a community activist, victim advocate, and trainer. She now focuses her attention and expertise on next gen issues in both philanthropy and the nonprofit sector, presenting her research and trends throughout the country. Since Spring 2007, Emily has been serving as a nonprofit consultant and philanthropic advisor to various individuals and organizations through her company, Emily Davis & Associates Consulting. She has served on numerous nonprofit committees and boards in Colorado and San Diego and recently completed her Masters of Nonprofit Management from Regis University. She serves on the Board of Directors for the Association of Fundraising Professionals San Diego; as an adjunct-professor at UCSD Extension's Fundraising Certificate program; Editorial Advisor for Nonprofit World Magazine; and serves on many other committees.
Sherri Petro - Panelist
President, VPI Strategies and founding partner in Workplace Evolution
Sherri Petro has been consulting for 10 years in the for-profit, nonprofit, and government sectors after a 16 year corporate career. Sherri creates financially sustainable organizations and helps bridge the gap between generational misunderstandings that result from different belief structures and lack of coherent communication. She shares the motivations of each generation to help organizations create better targeting, messaging and connections to the marketers. Her diverse professional background includes customer service, operations, administration, sales, marketing and strategic planning. Sherri earned an MBA from Pepperdine University and BA in Psychology from Youngstown State University, magna cum laude.
John Falchi - Panelist
The general purpose guiding John in his calling is "Positive Well-Being for All Living Things." Although he is retired from being a College Pol. Sci. Professor, a Chief Development Officer for Major NGOs, and a Development Consultant to Non-profit Organizations, John continues to help many organizational leaders, who are in concert with his general purpose, to meet their goals and objectives, in fund raising, organizational planning, membership building and PR work, pro bono, through the Global Culture Network of P.A.C.E

This will be an active and fun workshop with a diverse group of nonprofit professionals - you’ll be applying and sharpening your networking skills as we practice them!

About Linda Spuck...
Linda Spuck is a Vice President/Trust Administrator in the Private Bank in downtown San Diego. Prior to joining Union Bank, Linda served in leadership positions in several non-profit organizations, including Director of Development for the San Diego Rescue Mission and the San Diego Historical Society. Her background in non-profit development helped prepare her to serve the Wealth Management Group’s not-for-profit clients. Linda holds the designation of Certified Trust and Financial Advisor (CTFA) from the Institute of Certified Bankers.
Linda is active in both local and national community service organizations, including Junior League of San Diego, Inc., Lyric Opera of San Diego/North Park Theater, Planned Giving Roundtable of San Diego, University of San Diego School of Leadership and Education Sciences, YMCA of San Diego and more!
About Brian Daugherty...Brian Daugherty has more 15 years experience in development with a focus on annual giving. He has worked for a variety of organizations in the nonprofit arena, including the Baltimore Symphony, the Baltimore Zoo, the University of Baltimore, the University of California, San Diego and San Diego State University. He currently serves as the director of development and alumni relations at the University of San Diego, School of Law and conducts fundraising consulting for Campbell and Company.
Mr. Daugherty’s experience includes extensive work on telemarketing campaigns, direct mail, board management, volunteer solicitations, e-philanthropy and personal solicitations. He has significant experience in statistical data analysis and strategic planning and has also been an integral team member of capital campaigns ranging in scope from $16 million to $1 billion.
Mr. Daugherty has served as the fundraising chair for several nonprofit organizations and is a frequent presenter to such organizations as the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE), the Annual Giving Professionals Network (AGPN) and Academic Impressions. He also has written for CASE Currents magazine.
Mr. Daugherty holds a bachelor’s degree in finance from the University of South Florida and a master’s degree in nonprofit management and leadership from the University of San Diego.

Learning to Lead: Professional Development Workshop
More and more emerging leaders (ages 35 and younger) are moving into leadership roles within nonprofits. With any changes in roles and responsibilities requires a distinctive leadership voice and outstanding management skills. From staff to volunteer to governance roles understanding what makes a great and effective leader is always a critical skill to have. Our discussion will include information about what is outstanding leadership and leaders that:
- “Pursue organizational mission regardless of constantly changing funding;
- Use cross-training and joint efforts with other organizations;
- Capture what organizations learn and share these lessons about success and setbacks, and;
- Understand that the legacy of their work is about creating a change that lasts beyond their organizational lifetime.”
Join YNPN San Diego and Liz Shear on Thursday, September 17 for a two hour workshop to learn about managing leadership shifts and advancement. Liz Shear, an organizational consultant who specializes in leadership and governance issues, will facilitate an interactive workshop including a guest appearance by one of her clients that will discuss how to navigate leadership change in your workplace and, a World Café discussion on your leadership goals and challenges. Powerful Partnerships: Multigenerational Coaching

How
can we support the emerging leadership trajectory? How can multiple
generations collaborate to advance our own personal and professional
goals across the generational divide? From Nonprofit Congress, Powerful
Partnerships: Multigenerational Coaching will pair 15 emerging leaders
and 15 seasoned leaders for this hands-on session about
supportive work relationships and peer coaching.
This
workshop introduces a simple individual planning tool for professional
growth; provides a set of coaching/mentoring tips; offers an
opportunity to practice collaborative peer learning; and suggests some
easy next steps to move participants towards their goals.
Emerging
leader
participants are asked to recruit and bring a seasoned leader to
participate in this multigenerational exercise. Participants
will be matched with folks outside their organization and the
attendance will be limited to 15 seasoned leaders (35 and over) and 15
emerging leaders (35 and younger) so be sure to sign up early!

Join YNPN San Diego for a discussion on Next Gen Governance, the second workshop in our innovative professional development series designed for emerging leaders by emerging leaders. Whether you currently serve on an advisory board or board of directors, or you are considering opportunities to serve the nonprofit community as a board member in the future, this conversational workshop will address some of the specific challenges and advantages you face as a Next Gen (35 and younger) leader.
Hosted in the “World Café” format, all attendees will have a chance to discuss their own experiences, observations, and ideas as well as learn from their fellow participants – other emerging leaders in the local nonprofit community! Working in small groups and moving to a new group between questions, you will engage in three rounds of discussions on important questions dealing with the participation of Next Gen members in board governance. Like YNPN, the World Café is about not only conversation, but also action. Be prepared to take away new ideas and action items on nonprofit governance.

Development Series Launch: Next Gen ED Panel!
If you want to know what it takes to lead an organization, then attend this free and informative event, and learn what it means to be a “next gen” executive director in the San Diego nonprofit community! YNPN San Diego launches its brand new, 2009 Professional Development Workshop Series with a Next Gen ED Panel on January 28th.
As a nonprofit leader (or an aspiring leader) YNPN
San Diego wants to
support your growth and knowledge on leadership. We are excited
to have a distinguished panel of next gen executive directors that
will: 1) share their expertise and insight; 2) provide an inside
look into managing their own organizations; and 3) leave you
learning something new!
The
program will run from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Panelists will be led in a
moderated discussion followed by a Q&A opportunity for attendees.
There will be a brief period before and after the hour-long panel
discussion for networking. A community table will be available if you
have job postings, upcoming events, or other organization news that you
would like to publicize. Please remember to pick up your materials as
you exit the event. Finally, we will have a gift give away at the end
of the evening for our donor members.

San Diego has an exciting and thought provoking evening planned for
you! Join us on Thursday, November 6th as we partner with the San Diego
Repertory Theatre for an evening of theatre, music and mingling! Click here for our press release.
This
Meet & Greet month's includes a free pre-show happy hour for
mingling, with live music by Nisha.We will be seeing Water and Power,
Richard Montoya's penetrating look at Southern California's power
politics, embodied by the personal and political conflicts between two
high-level brothers in Los Angeles. Tickets will be only $25 (normally
$34), with $5 of each ticket sold going to support YNPN's member
programs. Use code "YNPN" for your ticket discount. After the show, all
attendees are invited to a post-show mingle at nearby club THIN.

Our
deepest thanks to Robert Egger for taking the time to meet with a group
of YNPN San Diego members during his visit for the SANDAN 2008 annual
conference! It was an incredible conversation and his discussion about
the V3 Campaign was particularly enlightening!
Meet and Greet August 12th at Universal Hillcrest!
The YNPN San Diego Meet and Greet at Universal Hillcrest was an amazing success!! We have posted the album here and to the blog. Thank you to all of you who attended - we had nearly 100 attendees and 60 new members!!! YNPN San Diego now has nearly 250 members.
