What made you decide to join YNPN San Diego?
Storytelling is a passion of mine, and I'm glad to be telling stories for the nonprofit sector. While working on video projects for American Public Media in St. Paul, Minnesota, I developed great relationships with professionals in the nonprofit sector of the community. When I moved to San Diego in September of 2020, a colleague in Minnesota suggested I look into the San Diego Chapter of YNPN. When I did, and saw some great things happening, I decided to join!
How has your YNPN San Diego membership impacted your career and/or your professional development?
What is one of your top values? How does it play a role in your personal and/or professional life?
Paying it forward is a value of mine and I make it a priority in both my personal and professional life. Reminding myself that any success I’ve had has been a result of support from others that I’ve had in some shape or form. Knowing that, I seek to lift others that can use a hand both personally and professionally.
What is a personal strategy or self-care practice you’ve used to cope with the impacts of COVID-19?
Without guilt, I have allowed myself to go on “dates” with myself. With support from my spouse, I take at least an hour each week to step away from any work-related or family activity and just go for a walk or short hike outdoors by myself. I’ve found that doing so has allowed me time to reflect on what's truly important in my life and it’s also boosted my professional creativity.
What is a career aspiration you have?
I would like to consistently partner with nonprofits in the San Diego area and provide them with effective and ethical storytelling capabilities to help expand the reach of their community services.
What are you currently working on either in your work or outside of it?
I’m currently working with Dreams for Change here in San Diego to increase enrollment and participation in their tax preparation services. I’m also creating a full-stack marketing campaign for Sybrina Fulton, mother of Trayvon Martin, to support the 10-year anniversary of the Trayvon Martin Foundation.
What are you most proud of in your career?
I’m proud of the long-lasting professional relationships I’ve been privileged to have.
